Introduction to Computer Networks (Part 1)

1. What is a Network?

A computer network is a group of two or more computers and devices connected together to share information and resources.

Examples:

  • Computers connected in a school computer lab.
  • Mobile phones connected through the Internet.
  • Computers connected in an office.

Advantages of a Network:

  • Sharing files and data.
  • Sharing printers and other devices.
  • Easy communication between users.
  • Fast exchange of information.

2. Types of Network

a) LAN (Local Area Network)

A network that covers a small area such as a room, school, office, or building.

Examples:

  • School computer lab
  • Office network

Features:

  • Fast speed
  • Low cost
  • Covers a small area

b) MAN (Metropolitan Area Network)

A network that covers a city or large town.

Examples:

  • Network connecting different schools in a city

Features:

  • Covers a larger area than LAN
  • Connects multiple LANs

A network that covers a very large area such as a country or the whole world.

Examples:

  • The Internet

Features:

  • Covers long distances
  • Connects computers worldwide

3. What is Network Cabling?

Network cabling is the system of cables used to connect computers and other devices in a network.

These cables carry data from one device to another.

Importance of Network Cabling:

  • Provides communication between devices.
  • Helps in fast data transfer.
  • Creates a reliable network connection.

4. Types of Cables Used in Networks

  • Used for cable television and internet connections.

c) Optical Fiber Cable

A cable made of thin glass or plastic fibers.

Features:

  • Very high speed.
  • Can transmit data over long distances.
  • More expensive than other cables.

5. Computer Network Components

The main components required to create a computer network are:

a) Computer

The main device used to send and receive data.

b) Network Interface Card (NIC)

A hardware device that allows a computer to connect to a network.

c) Switch

Connects multiple computers within a network.

d) Router

Connects different networks and provides Internet access.

e) Modem

Connects a computer network to the Internet service provider (ISP).

f) Network Cables

Used to physically connect devices in a network.
