On 14th September 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted Hindi, written in the Devanagari script, as the official language of the Republic of India. This decision was later made part of the Indian Constitution under Article 343.
India is a multilingual country with hundreds of languages.
After independence in 1947, there was a need to choose an official language for the Union government.
A compromise was made: Hindi would be the official language, and English would continue to be used for official purposes for a transitional period of 15 years.
This decision was finalized on 14 September 1949.
