The National Sports Day in India is celebrated on 29th of August, on the Birth Anniversary of Hockey player Major Dhyan Chand. He represented India in 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics and winning a gold medal on these three times. Major Dhyan Chand scored 570 Goals from 185 matchers i 1926-1949.
‘Major Dhyan Chand Award for Lifetime achievement in Sports and Games’ is the official name of Dhyan Chand Award. He was born in Rajput family Allahabad on 29th August 1905. The Haryana, Punjab and Karnataka organize various sporting activities and seminars aimed to spreading awareness and importance of sports in life.
In 1956 India government awarded Major Dhyan Chand has the third highest civilian honour of Padma Bhushan. Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award renamed after Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.
Dhyan’s brother Roop sing also a hockey player. Dhyan is sone of Subedar Singh and Shradha Singh. Major Dhyan Chand was known for his extraordinary goal-scoring feats and he is called as ‘God of Hockey’. After 41 (year Moscow 1980), the Indian men’s hockey team won an Olympic medal in Tokyo 2020.
The Dhyan Chand Award for life-time achievement in Sports & Games introduced in year 2016. Dhyan Chand became a hockey player, when he was a part of the British India Army. ‘The Wizard’ is the Nickname of Dhyan Chand. His full Name is Dhyan Singh.
In 2020 Tokyo Olympics Neeraj Chopra became India’s second individual Olympic Champion after Abhinav Bindra for men’s javelin throw, secured gold medal. This is the first track and field medal at any Olympics.
Major Dhyan Chand remains an inspiration to all athletes. His life teaches us that hard work, discipline, and passion can lead to greatness.
Let us remember him not just as a hockey player, but as a true hero of India who played for the pride of our nation.
