Utilization of Skill Labs in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya
Under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 integration and mainstreaming of vocational education with general education has been identified as the key reform in the education-skill system of the country.
National Education Policy-2020 aims to overcome the social status hierarchy associated with vocational education and requires integration of vocational education programmes into main stream in all education institutions. Beginning with vocational exposure at early ages in middle and secondary school, quality vocational education is to be integrated smoothly into higher education. NCF 2023 has also mandated the teaching of Vocational Education as a mainstream subject starting from class 6th.
Accordingly, to strengthen skilling ecosystem in JNVs, Skill Labs have been established in JNVs under various projects:-
- 16 Skill Labs under ‘Skilling at Schools’ project of CBSE & World Bank
- 35 Skill Labs under NVS project funded by CBSE.
- 25 Automotive Labs under collaboration with TML
- ATL cum Multi skill labs in 250 PMSHRI Phase 1 JNVs.
- Multi skill Labs in 308 JNVs under PM SHRI Phase 2&3
- 02 skill labs in 400 JNVs under SANKALP (Skills Acquisition and Knowledge Awareness for Livelihood Promotion) project of MOSDE.
Introducing Skill Subjects in JNVs:
Introducing Skill Subjects in JNVs: At Middle stage (class 6 to 8):
As per recommendation of NCF 2023, for teaching of vocational education as mainstream subject, NCERT has released the textbooks of vocational education for class 6, 7 and 8th (being released shortly).
Instructions are already issued in Perspective Academic Plan 2025-26 for allocation of periods for vocational education subject, if SUPW teacher is 1 available in JNV, He/she will take classes for vocational education. Otherwise, the periods of vocational education will be distributed between TGT Art, TGT music and TGT computer science.
Further, CBSE has also introduced 12 hours skill module for students of class 6 to 8th, one such module may be integrated with vocational education subject in each class from 6, 7 and 8. The content of these modules is already made available by CBSE and assessments are school based preferably project based. CBSE has developed a portal for registration and certification of students for the skill modules offered by CBSE.
At secondary stage (class 9 and 10) –
Skill subject mapped with available skill lab in JNV is to be offered as sixth additional subject along with the existing five compulsory subject.
At senior secondary stage (class11 and 12) –
skill subject mapped with the skill lab available in JNV may be offered as optional subject with enrolment of minimum 15 students in a skill subject. If there is any skill subject, currently opted by the students of class 10th and 12th, the same may be continued for the current session only.
New skill subject should be introduced only as per the job role of existing skill lab in JNV. However, IT based skill subjects may be opted at senior secondary level, If the post of PGT-CS/IT is already sanctioned for the JNV. Likewise, for secondary level, TGT-CS may be utilized for IT based skill subjects. As per the revised Affiliation Bye-Laws of CBSE, a school does not have to apply separately for introducing any additional subject(s) including skill subject(s).
The school shall fill the details for Skill subjects introduced in the OASIS form and provide the required details. For Curriculum, Study Material/Text Books/ Sample Question Papers and Previous Years Question Papers of the various Skill Subjects/Modules being offered by CBSE from classes VI to XII and other instructions circulars related to Skill Courses, JNV may visit the Skill Education web page of the CBSE Academic website.
