Objectives of Pace Setting Activities in Navodaya Vidyalaya

One of the basic objectives of the Navodaya Vidyalaya scheme has been to enable the JNVs to play the role of a pace setting institution in the field of school education in the respective districts. The aim of the pace setting activities is to “galvanize academic, social, cultural and community oriented environment of schools” in the vicinity. By virtue of having a highly qualified and competent team of teachers, state of the art laboratories and IT infrastructure, teaching aids, sports equipment and rich libraries the JNVs are in a position to function as a “focal point for improvement in the quality of school education in general, via sharing of experience and facilities.” Though the ambit of pace setting activities is pretty vast and much of the activities will depend on the ingenuity of the Principals and their team, some major activities in the area are suggested below :

Academic Excellence:

1. Innovations and experimentations in the teaching-learning process
2. Training/ workshop of teachers to adapt to the latest educational technology
3. Optimum use of Vidyalaya laboratories and library
4. Use of Mathematics and junior science laboratories
5. Use of ICT in classroom interaction
6. Effective communication and computation skills
7. Counselling, Career Counselling and motivational sessions

Co-curricular activities:

1. Participation of the students of the neighboring schools in the co-curricular activities of the JNV Competitions and exhibitions
2. Programmes for the neighboring schools on awareness of issues like conservation of nature, road safety, first aid, cleanliness, civic sense, democratic values and scientific temperament
3. Scouts and Guides and other adventure activities
4. Organizing Youth Parliament session and workshops on fine arts and performing art.

Community Services:

1. Coaching of rural children for JNVST
2. Organizing camps for immunization, health check-up, first aid training, pollution control, cleanliness drive & literacy campaign etc.
3. Providing mobile library for rural learners
4. Organizing awareness campaigns on health and hygiene, safe drinking water, population education, balanced diet, disaster management, RTI and consumer laws, child labour and right to education.
5. Organizing street plays for promotion of scientific spirit, conservation of nature and energy, water harvesting, tree plantation, family planning, education of the girl child, balanced diet, safe drinking water & pollution control as well as creating awareness on the evils of dowry system, untouchability, female feticide, alcohol and drug addiction, gambling, illiteracy and superstitions etc.

2. To keep pace with the current needs of society.
3. To advertise the benefits of JNV among society / district
4. To enable district primary schools’ students to fight Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test, Lateral Entry Selection Test.

List of Activities Under Pace Setting

1. Offer library books for nearby schools’ students
2. Offer teachers’ services to empower primary school teachers and students
3. Render services for health check – up and use school resources for rural children
4. Offer school sports resources / equipment’s to district’s schools for empowerment
5. Organize seminars for advertisement of JNVST / JNV culture to inspire people to send their children to JNV
6. Organize camps for educated youth to empower them to crack CTET and JNV Teachers’ Entrance Exam
7. Organize computer literacy programme for rural youth
8. Invite other school students to visit JNV in order to inspire them to join JNV
