Operating System

  • An Operating system is system software that runs on a computer. An Operating System(OS) is a program that acts as an interface between the user and the computer hardware.
  • Operating system performs basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the disk, and controlling peripheral devices such as disk drives and printers.

Types of Operating System

1. Microsoft Windows –
  • Microsoft Windows is a group of OSs manufactured by Microsoft. Windows is available in 32 and 64 bit versions and offers a graphical user interface (GUI), Multitasking functionalities, Virtual Memory Management Capabilities, and support for several peripheral devices. On November, 1985, Microsoft Introduced Windows 1.0. Before Windows, users has to type MS-DOS commands.
2. MS-DOS (Microsoft – Disk Operating System)
  • It was the first operating system & developed by IBM corporation in 1981. It is a single user operating system. It is the only operating system which can be loaded in the main memory of the computer using a single disk.
3. Linux
  • Linux is a free open source operating system (OS) based on UNIX that was created in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Users can modify and create variations of the source code, known as distributions, for computers and other devices.
4. Unix
  • Unix is a portable, multitasking, multiuser, time-sharing operating system (OS) originally developed in 1969 by a group of employees at AT & T. Unix was First programmed in assembly language but was reprogrammed in C in 1973.
5. iOS
  • It is the popular mobile operating system developed by Apple Incorporation. This operating system is commonly used in Apple iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad etc.
6. Android
  • Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux Kernel and other open source software, designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets.
7. BlackBerry
  • BlackBerry OS is a proprietary mobile operating system developed by Research in Motion (RIM) for its BlackBerry line of smartphones. It is the most secure operating system used in leading Smartphones.
8. Symbian
  • Symbian is a discontinued Mobile Operating System and Computing platform designed for smartphones. It was originally developed as a proprietary software OS for personal digital assistant in 1998 by the Symbian Ltd. Consortium.
