a) Threats to Computer
Meaning: Any activity that can damage a computer, steal information, or stop it from working properly.
Examples of threats:
- Virus: A harmful program that spreads.
- Hacking: Unauthorized access to computer.
- Phishing: Fake messages/emails to steal passwords.
- Malware: Malicious software like spyware, ransomware, etc.
b) Virus and Its Types
Computer Virus: A program that damages files, slows down the system, or steals information.
It spreads through infected files, pen drives, or internet downloads.
Types of Virus:
- File Virus – Attaches itself to program files.
- Boot Sector Virus – Infects the computer’s startup (boot) area.
- Macro Virus – Found in MS Word/Excel documents.
- Worms – Self-replicating virus that spreads fast.
- Trojan Horse – Looks like a useful program but is harmful.
c) Antivirus
Definition: A program used to detect and remove viruses.
Examples: Quick Heal, Avast, McAfee, Kaspersky.
Uses:
- Scans computer for viruses.
- Removes or repairs infected files.
- Provides real-time protection.
d) Software and Types of Software
Software: A set of instructions/programs that tell the computer what to do.
Types:
- System Software – Controls computer hardware.
- Example: Operating System (Windows, Linux), Utility programs.
- Application Software – Used to perform specific tasks.
- Example: MS Word, Paint, Chrome browser, Tally.
e) Firewall and Its Use
Firewall: A security system (software or hardware) that controls incoming and outgoing network traffic.
Uses:

- Filters harmful websites.
f) Cyber Crime
Definition: Crime done using a computer and internet.
Examples:
- Hacking accounts.

g) Backup and Restore
- Backup: Making a copy of important files in another safe place (e.g., hard disk, Google Drive, pen drive).
